Cecil Rogers, Age 20

Private, 31120, 7th Battalion, South Lancashire.

Cecil was the youngest son of Alfred (an engine fitter) & Sarah of 22 Holly Hedge, Little Dawley.

He was a pre-war soldier who had enlisted into the KSLI (3420) in May 1914 prior too which he had worked at the Lightmoor brickworks. He had at some point in time got married as an address for a Mrs Sarah Rogers of 6 Top Croft, Cross Store, Todmorden; Lancashire is given in his records this may also explain why he ended up serving in the South Lancashire Regiment.

It was whilst serving with this regiment that he was wounded in action and was transported back to a base hospital at Abbeville in the Somme district of France. He was admitted to the 1St South African general hospital on October 12th with a bad fracture of the thigh bone. His condition was graver than as first thought when doctors found that gas gangrene had set in and nothing could be done to save him.

Cecil never recovered from his wounds and died on the 14th October 1917 and lies buried at the Abbeville Communal Cemetery in grave III. D. 2.

I can’t find a marriage for Cecil, in 1918 Cecil’s army pension was being paid to his mother Mrs Sarah Rogers at 4, Holly Road, Dawley, by 1923 the pension was still being paid to her at 6, Top Croft, Cross Stone, Todmorden, Lancs.
